There are different types of Ed (Eating disorders). Anorexia has the highest mortality rate than any other mental disorders. Though there is no correct answer on how this eating disorder is caused, it is all on how the person mentally feels. The social norms in this generation do have a very big effect on this. Some symptoms of these disorders are loss of at least 15% of body weight, intense fear of weight gain, insistence of keeping weight below a healthy minimum. Anorexia is when you starve yourself, excessive exercise. This disorder is or can be very serious and deadly.

Another eating disorder is Binge Eating Disorder (BED). BED is the most popular eating disorder in the US. What happens when you have BED is that you eat large amounts of food, then after eating all of it you get very guilty. The guilt turns into unhealthy eating habits like  throwing up their food.  3.5% of women have this, and 2% of men are also affected. Health risks of having BED are type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol, Gallbladder disease, certain cancers, Ect.

1 in 10 people who have an eating disorder will not get treatment for it. 50% of girls by the ages 11-13 will think they are overweight. 95% of all eating disorders are from the ages 11-25. 80% of 13-year-olds have attempted to lose weight. Even though so many people have eating disorders the prices to get treatment are very high, about $100,000 or more.

Questions

  1. If so many people have eating disorders why are prices to get it treated so high?
  2. Why are people not taking this mental illness as serious as they should?
  3. If we show more body positivity will the ED rates decrease significantly?

  1. Awesome post Alisha! ED are really scary and I am glad you pointed out how distorted body image is in our society today. There are some companies that are starting to use real life-size models with no photo editing. I really like the picture you used.
